The three-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy star, Carol Channing, who died Jan. 15, performed at The Dixie on Sept. 21, 2009 in the show named “An Evening with Carol Channing.” She was 97 at the time of her death.
Her Netflix movie, “Carol Channing – Larger Than Life” trailer, had sections that were filmed during her performance here, according to The Dixie’s Executive Director Lori Nolen.
Channing had lunch with Friends of The Dixie- Board of Directors, where she also met and spoke with children about their foundation ChanningART (Arts Returned To Schools). This foundation encourages involvement in your community and local PTA to return arts education to all public schools.
“She and her husband Harry both loved the fact that The Dixie, located in rural Tennessee, played such an important partnership role in arts education,” said Nolen.
She delighted American audiences with over 5,000 performances as the scheming Dolly Levi in “Hello, Dolly!”
Publicist b. Harlan Boll said Channing died of natural causes at 12:31 a.m. Tuesday in Rancho Mirage, California. He said she had twice suffered strokes in the last year.
“Besides “Hello, Dolly!,” Channing starred in other Broadway shows, but none with equal magnetism. She also appeared with George Burns in Las Vegas and a national tour.
She also made the movies, “The First Traveling Saleslady” with Ginger Rogers and “Thoroughly Modern Millie” with Julie Andrews.
