Carroll County part time deputy Daniel Paar, 65, died suddenly Sunday afternoon of an apparent heart attack while on his way home from taking his daughter to a Baptist Church School in Ky., according to Carroll County Sheriff Andy Dickson.
He had served as a baliff and prisoner transport deputy since March 2016 when he went to work for the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department.
Dickson said he received a call at 1:40 p.m. that Paar was found in his vehicle that had run off the side of the highway and hit a small tree on Interstate 40 in Decatur County at mile marker 120. A witness had seen him slumped over the wheel before he run off the highway.
The sheriff said he drove to the hospital in Parsons about 3 p.m. where he met his wife and son.
Paar worked for the Madison County Sheriff’s Department from 1977 until 1989 and then moved to Ohio. He returned to Madison County in 2003 and served as the assistant chief deputy until 2015 when he retired.
He lived in the Big Buck Community.
“He worked a couple of days a week for the county,” said the sheriff. “He did a lot for us.”
Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at George A. Smith Funeral Home in Jackson. Burial will take place in Ohio.
