One application to open a packaged liquor store in Huntingdon has been picked up and returned to city recorder Kim Carter.
Parth Patel, who owns and operates Express Deli and Grocery at 19015 West Main Street (former Major Market), will move the convenience store inventory to another location and put his liquor store there.
It will be named Huntingdon Liquors.
He picked up the petition on Jan. 28 and returned it the next day.
“I decided to focus on the liquor store since the present business has no gas pumps and business has not been that great,” said Patel.
It will have to go through a legal process before being granted, according to Carter. He must have a certificate of good moral character that will include a background investigation. Then it will be sent to town attorney Bob Keeton and Public Safety Director Walter Smothers for review. The town council could possibly pass it at their Feb. 26 meeting.
If council members approve it, the application will be sent to the state Alcohol Beverage Commission for approval, which is the last step in the process.
Carter said one more application has been picked up, but has not been returned.
